Bribery is not quite the same as 'compassion,' but I imagine this official doesn't care about the distinction as long as Orrick's moral crusade strengthens the church's power. Shame too, since Orrick wouldn't be so bitter and cruel and thus eager to ruin other people's lives if his religion didn't fill him with shame and misery.

Very well said. Bishop Herden only cares about his ties to the holly see, and in a way manipulates king Orrick to place the church above his people, even above the ones that love him.
